i have a doubt...can we write 2-chloro,4-bromo pentane instead of 2-bromo, 4-chloro pentane. is it wrong? can we number from any side of the chain if halogens are present on both sides?

we cannot write 2 chloro ,4 bromo pentane instead of 2 bromo ,4 chloro pentane because numbering preference should be correct .



1. If single bond and substituent is present then we should give preference to substituent .

2.If substituent and double bond is present then we should give preference to double bond .

3. If double bond and triple bond is present then we should give preference to triple bond .

4.If there is triple bond and functional group then we should give preference to functional group.




and also we should follow .

1. Longest chain rule .

2. Lowest number rule .

3. Lowest sum rule .

4. Alphabetical order .
