The is used for a unique or specific think.For eg The sun,The Harish Book,The Indus institution.
It is never used before a name for eg.The Rashi××(except two names which are Alexander the great and Ashoka the great,The god)
While A is used in words with a vowel..Like A pencil(e is a vowel)..etc.
