“There is a sufficiency in the world for man’s need but not for man’s greed” – this statement from one of the greatest men in our country, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi clearly depicted the generation where mankind entered into a race for survival and in the process, destroyed, degenerated and dilapidated the environment around him. Now 63 years after the great Mahatma imparted his wisdom, the situation has become worse. The environment which took care of humans, provided them with their needs and protected and cultivated mankind was abused so much by them that it started avenging itself. Global warming, planetary disintegration, unpredictable climates, hurricanes tycoons, tsunamis and flash floods have taken innumerable human lives.

Scarcities of power sources, rarity of clean, breathable air, depleting resources and natural disasters have threatened the existence of mankind. It is at this time that the human race came to realize that in order to survive; it has to protect the environment around him. The first target in this process was of course the industrial sector. The emissions of toxic air, dumping of hazardous and non-biodegradable materials into the seas and piling up of industrial wastes were the major contributors to this environmental disaster. With the introduction of strict government policies and ISO standards and efforts from non government organizations, every industry is now in need of an environmental manager who will assess the environment friendliness of an industry and define ways to develop, implement and monitor environmental strategies, policies and programs that promote sustainable development.

What is the role of environmental manager? He is an individual who carries out a Ctrl+Z on all the environmental felonies which were carried out by the company in the past, reversing the effect to the farthest extent possible. Environmental managers examine corporate activities and establish where improvements can be made and ensure compliance with environmental legislation across the organization. A few of their roles involve developing and implementing environmental strategies, taking the lead on sustainable procurement for all goods and services and coordinating all aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental health, conservation and renewable energy.

This is not all! This superhero, Mr. Green, whose ultimate goal is to protect the balance of nature and revive mother earth, does not fly around in caped costumes knocking out felons, but he does some serious desk work by ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, auditing, analyzing and reporting environmental performance to regulatory bodies, indentifying, assessing and reducing an organization’s environmental risk and financial costs, managing the development and implementation of an environmental management system,

participating in environmental study and research and pretty much doing anything which will minimize the environmental liability of an organization.

With stringent norms laid down by the government these days, the need for an environmental manager is of utmost importance and there are a plenty of opportunities to be found both in India and abroad. But, the main thing to be remembered is that, as a principal user of mother nature, humanity is responsible for ensuring that its environmental impacts are benign rather than catastrophic. It is high time that we realized our environmental responsibilities ourselves and acted accordingly. Mankind should not get involved in a fight for survival with the mighty environment, which is far more fierce and powerful and can erase the smallest traces of humanity from this planet if it wants to!
