Given : I have nineteen bills total which equal $215.

Nine of those bills are in my pocket.

The value of each bill is either $5 or $20.

To find :  the maximum total dollar value in my pocket

Solution:

in Total :

$5 = x bills

$ 20 = 19 - x bills

5x  + 20 (19 - x)  =   215

=> x + 4(19 - x)  = 43

=>   3x  = 33

=> x = 11

Hence  $5 = 11   bills  and  $20  =  8  bills

Nine of those bills are in my pocket

Hence 8  of  $20  and  1 of    $5  will give  maximum total dollar value in my pocket

= 160 + 5

= 165  $

maximum total dollar value in my pocket = 165  $
