I have two sons - highly educated Top class in their fields. Both of them was disliked having soup with included bay leaves. One day I got this bright idea. I told them that bay leaves were lucky. From that day my son stop complaining when they saw bay leaves in their soup. They say that superstition are passed down from one generation to next. I had just started a new one.
Knocking on wood is meant to bring good luck because benevolent spirits are thought to live in trees. I remember my grandfather telling us that if we knocked on wood, it would protect us from misfortune. when I think back, I smile at the my sister and I always knocked on the door before we left home. Even crossing your fingers it's meant to protect you from harm. Whenever I was called to the headmaster office I kept my finger cross behind my back, and left them that way sometimes with full results until I had written to the class. However, that did not ensure that I did not get mouthful from the headmaster or a sound thrashing for Mischief that had been up to.
No matter which part of the world you tour , you will find native nurturing certain rituals and superstitions. India is no exception. Society progress but people still hang on to the traditional customs and local beliefs. Thus anything from the calling if a bird or the falling of a utensils may be considered as a omen. The cawing of a black crow heralds the arrival of a guest or guests. Monday is not at auspicious day for shaving and Thursday is not good day to wash one's hair. Hiccups indicate that someone thinking about you.
This morning my mother called and said, "Are you all right? Is everything fine? I was thinking of you. did you have Hiccups?"
I said, "Mother, everything is fine and no, I have don't have hiccups for a week."
"Bad child," my mother complained. "This just shows how much you love your mother." I had to smile at that !
