i) The raw materials in the Solvay process are the following: Sodium chloride (NaCl) or commonly known as purified brine. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) or commonly known as limestone.

ii) Sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) is sparingly soluble or less soluble in water and it gets separated as a precipitate while NH4Cl remains in solution. This precipitate is removed by filtration.
