(i)Natural selection Nature selects those individuals who are fit in the environment. Fitness according to Darwin is reproductive fitness. Those who adapt better to the habitat will reproduce' more and progeny consist of more fit individuals, who are selected by nature.

(ii)The rate of appearance of new forms is linked to the life span of an organism. Example: Microbes that divide fast have the ability to multiply and become millions of individuals within hours. Thus any variation leading to natural selection and appearance of a new species is observable in them within days.
