➠ The Europeans started moving on to the unfamiliar and unknown lands in order to find work. This lead to the shortage of slaves and thus, in the seventeenth century, the slave trade began.
➠ The French merchants used to sail from their ports to the African ports in order to bring slaves. They bought the slaves from the local chieftains and later sold them to the plantation owners.
➠ Bordeaux and Nantes were the two famous ports and considered prosperous for the slave trade. These two ports came into limelight in the abolition of slavery.
➠ The National Assembly held a long discussion on the abolition of slavery but they couldn't decide anything and couldn't reach to any conclusion as they were feared of the big businessmen who's family income was fully dependent on the slave trade.
➠ The slavery was somehow abolished by the Jacobin regime but later after a period of ten years, the military dictator Napoleon Bonaparte reintroduced slavery. Slavery was finally abolished in 1848.
