Answer:

India is a democratic country, and in a democratic form of government, we elect our own representative who is responsible for governing the country, therefore it is extremely important that the people who enter the field of politics have a clear image and high moral character. Criminalization of politics has become a headache for the Indian democracy and it is a harsh reality now. It is more vicious than terrorism. Our ancestors, who fought for our freedom and their struggle behind the fight 70 years ago had a dream but we see the dream being shattered today. This criminalization of political parties is a result of the connection between criminals and politicians because of which the corrupt has become our leaders and our heroes.

India can vaingloriously claim itself as the world’s largest democracy, but can’t hold up to claim to be the greatest democracy of ideal representatives. Because, there is a constant and audacious increase over the years in the number of candidates in the elections, whether for Parliament or the state assemblies with criminal cases against them.

Milan Vaishnav in his famous book– ‘ When crime pays: Money and muscle in Indian politics’ explain how goondas and mafias have been a part of electoral politics since the birth of Indian democracy.

According to the law – even individual who have criminal cases pending against them can take part in elections as Indian law doesn’t bar those who are facing trials for serious criminal offence also and what’s more shocking and rather disgraceful is that these people even after committing serious criminal offences make their approach to the Parliament and Assemblies, which is the highest governing body of the country. Unfortunately, who we elect to make the law are themselves, criminals, before the law.

The ADR ( Association for Democratic Reforms) analysis shows that the candidates facing criminal charges had more chances of winning as compared to those with a clean record and this raises the question as to why Indians elect criminal politicians? It is usually said that people vote for criminals out of fear. Indian voters elect criminals due to the benefits of the divine they would receive from them since the politicians would have huge discretionary power over the implementation of policies that enable the distribution of benefits to the public.
