Potassium permanganate is commercially prepared by mixing solution of KOH and powdered manganese oxide, with oxidizing agents like potassium chlorate. The mixture is boiled evaporated and the residue is heated in iron pans until it has acquired a pasty consistency.

Aim – To determine the concentration/molarity/strength of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution by titrating it against a 0.1M standard solution of oxalic acid (COOH-COOH). We use sulphuric acid in this titration with KMnO4. The solution which contain MnO4- ion in it is purple in colour.
