the three friends who imagine themselves to be suffering from various imaginary illness decide to go up the river for fresh air , exercise & quiet for the forest. they take this decision by three to one vote after the writer gives a detailed account of how people fall sea sick on a sea voyage. montmorency is the only member of this team to have expressed his disapproval of this three man decision due to his natural dislike for the river , absence of any attraction for the natural scenery , denial of permission to chase a rat overboard , besides being a non smoker unlike the other three friends . thus , the 1st chapter of the novel sets the background for the rest of the story to develop in the chapters to follow.
