aryabhata or aryabhata I was born in 476 CE during the gupta era in kusumapurna (pataliputra)(present day patna). he was the first of the major mathematician-astronomers from the classical age of Indian astronomy. his notable works include the Aryabhatiya (in 499 CE when he was 23 years old) and the Arya-siddhanta. Aryabhata's system of astronomy was called audAyaka system,in which days are reckoned frm udays,dawn at lankas or equator. he may hv believed that the planet's orbits as elliptical rather than circular. he correctly insisted that the earth rotates on its axis daily and that the apparent movement of the stars is a relative motion caused by the rotation of the earth. solar and lunar eclipses,rotation of the earth on its axis,reflection of the lightby moon,sinusoidal function, solution of sinhle variable quadratic equation,value of pi correct to 4 decimal places,circumference of the earth to 99.8% accuracy and calculation of the length of sidereal year were also scientifically explained by Aryabhata.
