Answer : West Bengal’s Big Banyan is the world’s largest tree. The Big Banyan Tree is over 250 years old.

Explanation :  The Big Banyan is located in the The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical garden in Howrah, near Kolkata making it the widest tree in the world . The entire garden is actually one tree spans 14,500 square meters of land (3.5 acres) and is over 80 feet tall, making it one the natural marvels of the world. According to a report in the Business Insider, it is bigger than the average Walmart store at 9755 sq meters (105,000 sq feet). Banyan is the tree native to India and botanically it is known as Ficus benghalensis.

From a distance, the tree has the appearance of a forest, but what appear to be individual trees are actually aerial roots- around 3,600 of them.

After two cyclones in the 19th century that led to a fungal attack, the tree’s main 15.7-meter-wide (51-foot) trunk had to be removed. Fortunately, the “clonal colony” of the tree itself remains healthy.

A 330-meter-long road was constructed around the tree so that visitors could drive around the circumference, but the Great Banyan continues to spread beyond, growing wider with each passing year. Currently, it is already over 450-meters.

There are other large banyan trees across India, including the Old Banyan in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, the Gigantic Banyan Tree in Ranthambore National Park, and the Big Banyan in Bangalore.

The branches of this tree spread out to form a canopy over the entire area and the 3,600 roots of the tree form the expansive forest-like experience. This tree has withstood two great cyclones in 1864 and 1867 and continues to draw thousands of visitors to witness its grandeur. Today, it survives without its main trunk, which used to be 51 feet wide and gradually decayed, as a result of which it was removed in 1925.

A long road of 330 meters was constructed around the tree so that tourists could drive around the entire circumference of the structure, however, the Great Banyan continues to expand beyond this. Since the tree continues to grow in width, it has been nicknamed the “walking tree”.

In 1989, it was included in the Guinness Book of World Records as a tree that has the largest canopy and covers the widest span of area. Till date, it continues to hold on to this title and survive the churn of human history.
