The required number is 6, which gives 22 when multiplied by 3 and added 4 to the result.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let, the number be x.

When we multiply it by 3, the resulting number is 3x.

When we add 4 to the above result, the resulting number is (3x + 4).

According to the question,

3x + 4 = 22

⇒ 3x = 22 - 4 [ transposing 4 to the right hand side, where (+ 4) changes into (- 4) ]

⇒ 3x = 18

⇒ x = 18 ÷ 3 [ transposing 3 to the right hand side, when (× 4) changes into (÷ 3) ]

x = 6
