Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is a graet Indian engineer, scholar and statesman. He was born on 15 September 1860, into a Mulukanadu Brahmin family to Mokshagundam Srinivasa Shastry and Venkatalakshmamma
in Muddenahalli, 40 km from Bangalore. He is held in high regard as the first and pre-eminent Engineer of India and his birthday is observed as Engineers Day in India.
He finished his primary schooling from a Kannada medium school in Chikballapur and attended high school in Bangalore. He earned hisBachelor of Arts degree from Central College, Bangalore and later studied civil engineering in College of Engineering, Pune.
After graduation, he worked in the Public Works Department (PWD) of Bombay and was later invited to join the Indian Irrigation Commission. He implemented an extremely intricate system of irrigation in the Deccan area. He also designed and patented a system of automatic weir water floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune.
He led a very simple life. He was a complete vegetarian. As an engineer, he had devoted his life for public good. He worked as an engineer in various parts of India. He also worked as Diwan of Mysore. With the help of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, Maharaja of Mysore, he made a good contribution to the all-round development of Mysore state.
In 1915, while he was the Diwan of Mysore, he was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) by the British for contributions to the public good. He was also awarded with India's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna in 1955. He was known for sincerity,time management and dedication to a cause.
