=> The story is based on the backdrop of the war between Holland and Germany . The main protagonist is the narrator , a young girl - who being the only survivor of the war out of her family of seven , returns back to claim her mother's belongings form Mrs.Dorling at her residential address - Number 46 , Marconi street !

→ As the narrator knocks the door of Mrs. Doorling , she is taken aback as the lady shows no sign of recognition . Confused , she assumes that may be she had rung the wrong bell . But then , she notices the lady wearing her mother's green knitted cardigan . This assures her that she is on the correct address . She tries to introduce her as Mrs. S's Daughter and explains her about her motive of coming but the lady refuses to even talk to her and shuts the door . Dejected , the narrator decides to leave . But after a chain of events , she decides to make yet another attempt .

→ As She clearly remembers the past : Mrs. Doorling being an old acquaintance of her mother , had taken all their belongings as an excuse to protect them in case they had to leave . ( because of the ensuing war ) As a child , her mother had introduced her to the lady and had clearly mentioned the same address . So , once again She returns there , only to find a young girl at the door . The girl welcomes her in. As she enters the place , she is mesmerized seeing the precious belongings of her mother . But what makes her feel pitiful is that the belongings were in a poor condition . Their plight showed that they had been poorly managed and their value completely underestimated . The iron holder , pewter plate , silver crockery had been all in pitiful state .

→ Seeing their plight , she finally decides to leave her past behind . The things were now of no use to her - her mother had been dead and the precious possessions had no place in her house or heart . So she decided to move on : resolving to forget the address !
