FOOD ADDITIVES AND UNHEALTHINESS

Nutrition says that consuming foods that are wholesome is the most effective diet. The more natural foods you eat it is supposed that the better you will be. This means consuming foods that are unprocessed and that do not contain preservatives, artificial colours, chemicals, fillers, artificial flavours etc. Food additives are stuffs added to preserve flavour or improve its taste and looks. Few of the additives such as pickling, vinegar, salting etc. have been used for centuries. Other common preservatives involve preserving sweets or using sulphur as with wines. With the upcoming processed food in 2nd half of twentieth century many more additives have been introduced. In order to regulate the additives and for delivering the information to the users of information every additive is assigned a unique number called as "E- numbers”, for example, acetic acid is written as E260 on products, but it is also known as additive 260 in some countries.

Additives become the part of food either directly or indirectly at some stage of processing. It affords us the convenience and enjoyment of a wide variety of appetizing food. Their quantities in food are small, yet there impact is big. Direct food additives serve four major purposes:-

·         To provide nutrition.

·         To maintain product quality and freshness.

·         To aid in the processing and preparation of food.

·         To make food appealing.

Natural food additives include:

Flavours to the food are added with the help of herbs and spices.Vinegar for pickling foodsSalt, to preserve meats

Whereas, some studies have linked some food additives to the hyperactivity in children. Side Effects of the few of food additives are as follows:

·         Antibiotics given to chicken and cows

·         Oily and fatty foods having antioxidants.

·         Aspartame, sodium cyclamate and saccharine used as artificial sweeteners.

·         Fruit juices containing benzoic acid.

·         Corn starch, waxes and gums are used as food stabilizers.

·         Dyes and colouring materials.

·         Nitrates in processed meat product

·         Packaged vegetables, wine and beer contain sulphites.

There are some people who are sensitive to some of food additives and may have reactions like hives or diarrhoea. Some of the food additives may cause reactions such as digestive disorders, nervous disorders, respiratory problems and skin problems.
