Air pollution is the major issue the people in cities and especially in NCR region and other metros are facing today. Air pollution causes many diseases not only to humans, but animals and other creates too.

The pollution in the air was increasing at the alarming level and as per WHO (World Health Organization) report, in the year 2012, air pollution caused 7 million deaths throughout the globe.

Natural and Human-made Air Pollutants

Air pollutants can be natural as well as human-made. Examples of natural air pollutants include dust and dirt, volcanic gasses and ashes, pollen and many other materials.

Human-made air pollutants mainly come from the burning of fossil fuels in transportation. More than 60% of air pollution is reported from vehicles and
There are many causes of the air pollution, and one of the major is industries and vehicles running on gasoline, diesel, LDO, heavy fuel, etc. Primary pollutants created by humans and their effect on human life are summarized below;

(a)    Sulfur oxides:  Fossil fuels contain sulfur as the minor ingredient and on combustion; sulfur present in fuel produces oxides of sulfur. The primary product of combustion is sulfur dioxide, which in the presence of some catalyst produces sulfur trioxide resulting in the formation of sulfuric acid. It is also known as acid rain.

(b)    Carbon Mono-oxide (CO): Carbon mono-oxide is produced by incomplete combustion of fuel. It is colorless, odorless gas and very dangerous to human health. Inhaling CO can cause dizziness and headache; however higher dosage of carbon mono-oxide in our blood can even cause death.

(c)     Particulate Matters (PM): Particulate matters are small particles and produced by burning coal, liquid fuel in vehicles or industries. These particles can be in the form of solid particles or aerosols. Particulates less than 10 microns are referred as PM10 and less than 2.5 microns are referred as PM2.5 and PM2.5 particulates. These PM2.5 can cause cancer.
