I don't think that I, personally, can answer that question until faced with that stark choice. Like many poster on Quora, I've been fortunate enough never to have had to place my sorry skin between that which I hold dear and harms way (other than the occasional fight, but that's hardly a life or death situation) so cannot be 100% sure.

I would like to think so, but facing down death for a higher cause is the ultimate test of character which I earnestly hope is one I never have to take.

On the other hand, my Father spent seven years in the British Army, starting in 1940. I asked him once, many years after the war, whether he would ever fight for King and country again. He never spoke of the war, apart from the rare occasion he'd had a drink and even then only if prompted. He looked me in the eyes and said "No, never again." When prompted further he looked at my Mother (his German War Bride) and pointed out how many of my relatives were German, yet long before I was born they had been fighting my English family. He also pointed out the small house he rented from his meagre salary and asked me what it was he had worth laying down his life for. "Let the rich landowners fight, the one's with all the money. They've got more to lose than the likes of us. One factory owner is little different to another."

Of course, as son's do I argued with him, pointing out duty, patriotism and such like. He gave me the world weary look that I now recognise I give to my own son and just smiled.
