                                     Saving Environment Strategies

Where are the days when lambs and kids used to frisk and frolic down the verdant valleys?  Where are the days when the brooks and streams flowed down the slopes merrily? Where are the green meadows, pastures and terraced fields? Where is the pure blue sky with cotton-like cirrus flitting merrily high above?

The canker of industrialization has converted every town and city into hell. The sylvan beauty, which was so ubiquitous, has been replaced by factories and mills. The skyline that once was dominated by tall pines is an ugly sight of stacks spewing toxic fumes! The problems of Global warming, melting glaciers, decreasing forest covers, dwindling species of plants and animals, depleting ozone layer, etc. loom large on the future of mankind. 

The clear rills and brooks that were picnic spots have been converted into drainage channels, carrying effluents to the river, which has become a bigger channel carrying the muck to the sea! The entire world is losing its beauty and purity. The mankind a silent witness to this ugly transformation is waiting for some angel to come down and do the cleaning, preserving, and pollution managing!

How can we prevent this deterioration and degradation of our environment? The task of conserving and preserving it is quite Herculean.  The only solution to the critical environmental issues is people’s mass participation in saving the environment. Mass forestation drive, and stopping the use of fossil fuels altogether can solve this problem.

If we really need to save our environment, we must save forests. Franklin D. Roosevelt rightly said, “A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people. ” The present condition of forests in the world, especially developing countries is pathetic and miserable. Forests are the source of life. They are the giving angels. They give man oxygen, rains, wood, fruit, make the world look so beautiful, yet the sinister man kills them! Who will be more inhumane than man himself? Cutting of forests ultimately endangers man’s own existence. Deforestation has many disadvantages.

One of the major disadvantages of deforestation is that it disrupts the water cycle. Trees are responsible for drawing up water from the soil and releasing moisture into the atmosphere. Deforestation causes a disturbance in the water cycle and makes the environment drier. Climate change is a severe outcome of the excessive cutting down of trees. Forests lock up atmospheric carbon during the process of photosynthesis. Trees contain a major portion of carbon from the atmosphere.

Cutting of the forest cover has a negative effect on the environment. It results in an increase in the amount of carbon and other greenhouse gases in the environment. Burning of forests results in the emission of a large amount of carbon dioxide into the air. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases like the oxides of nitrogen and methane are known to trap atmospheric heat, thus increasing the average temperature of the Earth's surface. This increase in the temperature near the Earth's surface and oceans is termed as global warming.

 We need to take quick measures for preventing deforestation so that we can hope for an environment that is healthy to live in. The people of the world must unite and launch large scale afforestation drives in all the countries, especially the developing countries.

 Another very environment saving measure is the optimal use of fuel resources. Sagacious and frugal use of fossil fuels is the direst need of the hour. The present rate at which the fossil fuels are being used is quite alarming. There won't be left anything for the coming generations. Now the question arises; "Are we to leave a planet totally devoid of fossil fuels to the coming generations?" We will be called highly selfish generation, if we don't leave fuels for the future generations. We need to put our acts together. We must follow the principles of sustainable development. After all it is our responsibility to bequeath a healthy and prosperous planet.

The best option in front of us at present to tackle the problems posed by fossil fuels is the option of using alternative sources of energy. Renewable energy sources are the best bet in the scenario. And what can be a better  renewable resource than the sun? Besides, it is a renewable and clean energy source. Taking both environmental and economic cost, solar energy works cheaper than fossil fuel resources. Once we master techniques to harness solar energy, it can be a vital source of power on all planets.

In conclusion it can be said that if we have to save our health and environment from the adverse effects of using fossil fuels, frugal consumption, and replacing the fossil fuels with alternative sources of energy are the two viable options. We must switch over to them as early as we can for a brighter, healthier and safer future!
