Virtues and their Importance in Life
Leonardo da Vinci said very wisely “Who sows virtue reaps honor.” Oxford’s Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines virtue as behavior or attitudes that show high moral standards. Virtues are important because they allow you to have an overall feeling of peace and joy. Virtues give meaning and purpose to your life. You are able to direct your behavior towards beneficial and fulfilling activities. When you live your life according to virtues of faith, love, trust, honesty, compassion, courage, modesty, and forgiveness, then you can also form positive bonds with other people. A virtuous man is admired by one and all. Success in any field demands high moral standards from those who aspire for it. All the great men of all times have one thing in common. Their virtues are their rock.
The lives of great men of all times are inspiration and epitomes of virtues practiced in living. Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln, Einstein, Addison, Graham Bell, Helen Keller, Mahatma Gandhi, Booker T. Washington, Martin Luther King, Dr. Kalam, etc have been the heroes of mankind because of their virtues. Only on the foundation of strong virtues can the edifice of a true success be constructed.
Unfortunately, the level of virtues by the youth in the contemporary times has deteriorated. All they seek is pleasure, by hook or crook. When pleasure becomes your chief concern, virtues are bound to suffer. Low academic grades, addiction to bad habits, failures, are indicators of moral degradation, which will further have its serious repercussions on mental and physical health.
In such times, teachers and parents can play a crucial role in explaining to the young children the importance of sound moral value system. They can teach them life-transforming virtues by being excellent role models.
