Osmosis refers specifically to the movement of water, either through natural semi-permeable membranes or artificial membranes. These membranes, such as that making up the cell membrane, only allow very small particles such as water to pass through easily. The prefixes on "osmosis" refer to movement into (end) or out of (ex) the cell and depends on where the concentration of water molecules is higher. Molecules there will flow across the membrane in order to balance concentrations of solutes.
In everyday life see exosmosis (net loss of water from the cell) when we rinse out mouths with salt water in order to ease swelling in the gums. The swelling is excess water in our gum cells and the salty rinse pulls some water out. When we make dried fruit we are exposing the cells to the air where there is less moisture than in the fresh fruit. If you leave grapes out for too long they turn into raisins (exosmosis). You can soak them in water, and they swell back up (endosmosis)
We use endocytosis when we soak wilted vegetables in water so they get crispy again. The water enters the cells of the vegetables (endosmosis), which are wilted because they have last water (exosmosis).
