CLIMATE OF ASIA

Asia is the largest continent in the world so it has over 8 different climatic zones. Asia extends from the Arctic Circle to the Equator. Variation in climate across Asia is due to the oceans, mountains, deserts as well as the varied wind patterns. Some areas experience extreme heat, or freezing cold, or experience a pleasant climate.

The lowest temperature ever recorded in Asia was in Verkhoyansk, a small town of Russia, a temperature of minus 50°C. The highest temperature was recorded in Jacobabad in Pakistan, a temperature of 55°C a variation of over 100 degrees.

Rainfall

Rainfall across Asia is unevenly distributed.Regions like the Indian sub-continent, South China and Japan receive heavy rainfall. Tthe desert regions of Asia receive scanty rainfall. The parts of South-East Asia, Sri Lanka and the south East Coast of India get rain in the winter.

Based on the diverse climates Asia is divided into eight distinct regions. They are

  • The Equatorial region
  • The Monsoon region
  • The Temperate region
  • The Desert region
  • The Steppes
  • The Mediterranean region
  • The Taiga region and
  • The Tundra region.

The Equatorial region

The Equatorial region is region is hot and humid. Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines fall in this region. Forests of this region are evergreen and trees are mahogany, ebony, rubber, neem, cinchona, rosewood, peepal and mango. A variety of animals like elephants, monkeys, snakes as well as different birds are found here.

The Monsoon region

The Monsoon region has hot, humid summers and cool, dry winters. These regions are covered with deciduous forests. Trees shed their leaves every year. Forests in the monsoon region have trees like teak, sandalwood bamboo and sal trees. Animals like elephants, tigers, rhino, deer, leopard and stag are found in these forests.

The Temperate region

The temperate region is characterised by warm summers and cool winters. This region is covered with deciduous forests that have trees like oak, camphor and mulberry trees. These forests are home to a variety of animals like wolves, camels, wild donkeys and antelopes.North East Asia falls in this region.

The Desert region

The deserts are located on the parts of South- West and Central Asia. This region experiences a hot and dry climate with scanty rainfall. Plants like cacti, date and palms animals like camels and asses are found here.

The Steppes

The steppes have cold winters and warm summers. To the north of the deserts are the steppes. Vast expanses of short grass are found here. Antelope and deer reside in these grassy regions.

The Mediterranean region

This region experiences wet, cold winters and hot, dry summers. Trees of this region are chestnut, cedar, cyprus, oak, and olive. This region is known for its horses. Western Asia comes under this region.

The Taiga region

The Taiga region experiences cold winters and warm summers.Central Siberia comes under this region. This region has coniferous forests like pine, spruce and fir. Animals like sable mink, polar foxes and bear are found here.

The Tundra region

The northern coast of Asia falls in the Tundra region. The Tundra region experiences long, cold winters and short, cool summers. This region is covered with snow for a major part of the year.Vegetation here includes mosses and lichens. Animals like polar bears, polar dogs and the reindeer are found here.
