Republic of Malawi is a landlocked country is a landlocked country in southeast Africa Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique border it, with Lake Malawi separating it from Tanzania and Mozambique . Malawi stretches over 118,000 km2 and is a home to 16,777,547 people. Lilongwe is its capital ,also largest city with Blantyre and Mzuzu in second and third position.
The country gets its name from Maravi, an old name of the Nyanja people that inhabit the area. The country is also nicknamed "The Warm Heart of Africa".
This area was first settled in by migrating Bantu groups and then
centuries later the area was colonized by the British. In 1953 Malawi then Nyasaland, became part of the semi-independent central African Federation (CAF). In 1964, Nyasaland gained full independence and was renamed Malawi. Malawi is a democratic, multiparty country, and has an efficient defence force with all three wings. Malawi’s population is mostly rural, hence it has an agriculture based economy. It isn't too advanced medically. It has a diverse population of natives, Asians and Europeans,with various languages and religious beliefs. Although there was periodic regional conflict for a short time, but by 2008 it had diminished and nationality had reemerged. Malawi has a rich culture and cuisine. Soccer is the most popular sport in Malawi, although Basketball is also growing in popularity.
Malawi also houses some of the best handicrafts of the world.Many people from Malawi have reached the world's stage and added to the reputation of the country.
