For a lot many citizens, Independence Day would flash the thought of the three powerful wings of the
indian armed forces

 – the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. The men and women who serve the country with their indomitable spirit have always been the pride of the nation. ji

Their stories of courage and passion have often swelled our hearts with pride and reminded us how much we take our freedom for granted. As we celebrate the 70th year of our Independence, we listen in as a few brave hearts recall their memories during service.

I LOST MY HEARING BUT INDIA GAINED TWO OUTPOSTS

COLONEL RAMCHANDRAN K RETIRED bengaluru,

It was the year 1971 and I was in a forward post in Tangdhar,

Kashmir

, a narrow strip of land all around which is Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. We were guarding an area overlooking the Lipa Valley.

On the night of December 2, 1971, sudden orders were given to us to attack two Pakistani posts, simultaneously. This was a surprise move because the war was going on in Bangladesh, not Pakistan.

Along with our troupes, we moved to the designated position at midnight, and after a steep climb, reached the post by around 4.30 am. I was part of the leading scouts and we overpowered the night sentries of the Pakistani post. Thereafter, we formed an assault position and started firing at the enemy. After intense fighting, parts of the post were captured but we knew that by the crack of dawn we could expect a counterattack.

So we got into defence positions and as predicted, a nearby Pakistani artillery observation post started firing directly at us.

Luckily for us, because of the steep nature of the terrain the shells did not land on us and went over our heads. But after a long bout of firing they learnt to direct it at us.

All of a sudden I heard the sound of a shell whizzing through the air, very close to me.

My fellow officer and I immediately jumped into a trench and the shell exploded a foot away, with the loudest boom ever.

I was barely 26, just a captain. When you are a soldier you never know if you will return when you say goodbye to everyone. But at that moment the only thing on your mind was to capture the post and also, prayer.

The trench and our helmets saved our lives that day and slowly, we clawed each other out from the debris. However, I realised that my colleague and I could not hear each other and there was just a buzzing in our ears. But I ignored it and continued in the battlefield as we had one more post to capture, which was even more difficult as it was bright daylight by then. We had to surprise the enemy from behind to win that operation, and by night, the post was captured.

We returned victorious but for the next 15-20 days I was completely deaf and could only follow lip movements. It was only later that I realised that the nerves in my ear had been damaged completely that day. When it dawned on me that I had lost my hearing, I was completely demoralised and depressed for a while. It was my mother who gave me strength telling me that I was luckier than my counterparts who had lost limbs and their lives even.

I still suffer from hearing problems but I’m proud to say that even today, those posts we captured are held by India.
