First Let's get to know about what UPSC exams are meant for and their significance.
UPSC stands for Union Public Service Commission which conducts many exams for pursuing our career on Civil Services like IAS, IPS, IFS, etc. It witnesses more than 15 lakh aspiring students who give this exam every year on average.
Levels of Exams:
- UPSC Prelims
- UPSC Mains
- Interview Round
UPSC Prelims:
- This exam is conducted during the time of May to August.
- It is like a screening or skimming test to eliminate most of the students giving the exam.
- It is generally given by 15 lakh students per year on average.
UPSC Mains:
- This exam is conducted during the time of October to December.
- As the name tells, it is like the Main exam for qualifying to the next level of Interview.
- It is given by 15,000 students after 14 lakh students fail to pass the Prelims by cutoff.
Interview Round:
- This round is conducted during the time of March to May.
- This round is the last step for becoming a civil service employee.
- It is generally given by 1000 to 1500 students on average.
Now comes the interesting part of getting to know about the exams.
UPSC Prelims:
- It is a Objective paper of 400 marks with two Papers.
- Paper 1 and Paper 2 have 200 marks each.
- A candidate needs to qualify in both the papers to advance to Mains.
- Duration of the exam is 2 hours or 120 minutes.
- Negative Marking is also present ( 1/3 marks )
- Medium of Paper is English and Hindi.
UPSC Mains: ( Language Paper )
- It is a Written Exam with total of 2075 marks.
- There are a total of 7 papers in each Paper A and Paper B and all are essay type questions.
- Each paper has allotment of 250 marks.
- Personality Test also done for 275 marks.
- To qualify for Interview you need to pass in 2 papers ( A and B )
- For getting a rank with Merit you have to pass in all 7 papers.
Interview Round:
Interview Round is generally called the personality test. Some of the qualities considered by examiners are:
- Mental alertness
- Critical powers of assimilation
- Clear and logical exposition
- Balance of judgement
- Variety and depth of interest
- Ability for social cohesion and leadership
- Intellectual and moral integrity

UPSC Preliminary
Prelims is basically the screening round.
The preliminary is meant only to shortlist the candidates for the mains examination.

UPSC Mains
Candidates who qualify in the preliminary examination are only allowed to give this exams.
The main examination is held to know the overall intellectual skills of a aspirants.

UPSC Interview/Personality Check
Interview Round is basically a personality check and it will be conducted in Delhi at the Union Public Service Commission's headquarters.

Eligibility Criteria
1. Nationality - Aspirants must be a citizen of India.
2. Educational Qualification - Aspirants must have a Bachelor's Degree from any of the recognized universities.
3. Age Limit - Aspirants should be a minimum of 21 years and maximum 32 years old.
4. Number of attempts - Restriction are mainly based Caste.
- General Candidates - 6 attempts (Up to 32 Years)
- Other Backward Classes - 9 attempts (Up to 35 Years)
- Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Candidates - No Limits (Up to 37 Years)
- Physically handicapped - 9 Times for general and OBC and unlimited for SC/ST
