To balance a chemical formula first should see the number of atoms in the reactant side and then in the products side and then you should balance.
for eg.
hydrogen+oxygen=water
FIRST STEP:
H2+O2=H2O
SECOND STEP SEE BOTH THE SIDE
THERE IS ONLY ONE OXYGEN IN THE WATER SIDE THEREFORE NOW THE EQ. IS
H2O+O2=2H20
NOW IN THE WATER SIDE 4 HYDROGEN IS THERE THEREFORE NOW THE EQ. IS
2H2+O2=2H2O
NOW IT IS BALANCED.  BY THIS WAY YOU SHOULD BALANCE A CHEMICAL EQ.

to balance a chemical equation you need to know 4 steps they are
1)determine the reactants and products of chemical equation
2)now know the atoms of the reactants and products of chemical equation
3)some times there is a possibility that the coffeciantsof all the substances gettingdivided with a suitable number.since we require the lowest ratio of coefficent for reactants and products the above operation is to be done.if no common equation factor is there, there is no division of the coefficients of the substances.
4)verify the equation for the balancing of atoms on both sidesof the equation.
