okay, I am (was) in the same situation, I haven't yet learnt Japanese but yes i know how to at least.
so some tips and stuff.
1. NEVER LEARN FROM ROMAJI, NEVER.
2. Learn the Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji.
3. Practice everyday
4. Make use of apps and websites, I personally use Duolingo
5. Buy a separate [nice] book and learn and write in that.
