Methodology
The overall methodology which was applied for the realization of the project concerning the monitoring of the chemical quality of irrigation water bodies was based on protocols, methods and techniques developed over the years by the scientific personnel of the pesticide science laboratory of aristole university of thessaloniki, greece and widely accepted methods.
Objectives
-To asses the existing air quality.
-To asses the extent of pollution of water bodies due to developmental activities.
-To asses the quality of soil and extent of soil pollution and soil degradation.
-To asses the amounts of sewarage generated and its quality.
-To asses the efficiency of existing sewage system and propose sewage treatment facilities.
Results
- Sediments carry phosphorous and pesticides adsorbed to the sediments particles.Siltation of rivers beds and loss of habitat, spawning ground.
-Runoff nutrients, especially phosphorus, leading to eutrophication causing taste and odour in public water supply, excess algea growth leading to deoxygenation of water and fish kills.
Conclusion
The water quality database that is available in many developing countries is of little value in pollution management at the river basinscale nor is it useful for determining the impact of agricultural relative to other types of anthropogenic impacts.
