In the UK it is illegal, for your safety, to walk along roads designated as motorways, but that is the only such rule. It is felt that high vehicle speeds, and the slipstream from lorries is too hazardous.

India has a problem with pedestrians using the carriageway rather than the footway at the sides, mostly women who will be harrassed and groped by other pedestrians, although here are also problems with hawkers completely blocking the footway. They are trying to find a solution but so far have not banned walking in rhe roadway.
