(i) When the acceleration is acting in the same direction of velocity, it is called as positive acceleration.
For ex when we throw a ball towards earth from a high building, the acceleration is in downward direction and the ball is also moving downwards. So the acceleration is positive

(ii) When the acceleration is acting in opposite direction of the velocity, we say acceleration is negative.
For ex when we throw a ball upwards, the acceleration due to gravity acts downward. Means in opposite direction of velocity. So here acceleration is negative.
