Per capita income can not be taken as the only indicator of development of a nation, This is because increase in income involves both costs and benefits. Costs arising out of economic activities (e.g., pollution) do not get reflected in the per capita income figures. In spite of these limitations of per capita income as an index of development, it is used widely as a measure of growth.
