Because the water molecules expands on cooling due to which the density of ice is less than water and ice floats over it.

aanchalverma20: can i ask why ice has low density than water
aanchalverma20: ritu?
ritttu: i told it because the water molecules expands on cooling due to which the density of ice becomes less than water

Although most substances are more dense when they are a solid state, water is actually less dense when it is a solid. Therefore, ice will float above the liquid water below.

Hope it helps!!

aanchalverma20: i can't understand but then to thank you
