ice is less denser than water because in ice the molecules arrange themselves in a rigid tetrahedral structure due to which cage like spaces remain in their bonding. But water molecules remain in linear bonding form. As the volume of ice becomes greater, it is less denser

☆Actually welcome to the concept of the Solid state and the Anamolous behaviour of water at 4° CELCIUS. .
☆Basically we know that the water has the highest density at the temperature 4° CELCIUS.....but as we decrese the temperature...of the water....there is
☆phenomenal change in which there is bond fprmation betwen hydrogen and oxygen called as hydrogen bonding....thus ....
☆there are spaces between the bonds and the air gets trapped in it ...due to which the ice is very Much lighter and thus it is lighter in density than water.....
