2 North, South, East, and West are the four main "cardinal" directions. On a map, North is at the top, South at the bottom, West to the left, and East to the right. Every map has a Map Scale which relates distance on the map to the world. For example, one inch equals one mile.

3Political Maps - does not show physical features. Instead, they show state and national boundaries and capital and major cities. Physical Maps - illustrate the physical features of an area, such as the mountains, rivers and lakes. Topographic Maps - include contour lines to show the shape and elevation of an area

4.A linear scale is a line which is divided into equal parts. It is used on maps to show the relationship between a particular distance on a map and the actual distance on the earth. A linear scale is also called a bar scale, scale bar or graphicscale.

Beside these major directions we have four intermediate directions—North-east (NE), South-east (SE), South-west (SW) and North-west (NW). The intermediate directions are very helpful in locating any place more accurately.
