⟹ The above figure depicts Sign convention for mirrors (spherical mirrors)

▪This new cartesian sign convention is used for measuring the various distances in Ray diagrams of spherical Mirrors (concave mirror and convex Mirrors) .

▪With knowledge of sign convention, we would be able to draw accurate ray diagrams.

▪It is also very helpful while solving numericals related to spherical mirrors.

 \bf \: \underline{According \: to \: the \: new \: cartesian \: sign \: convention} :

(i) All the distances are measured from the pole of the mirror as origin.

(ii) Distances measured in the same direction as that of the incident light are taken as positive.

(iii) Distances measured against the direction of incident light are taken as negative.

(iv) Distances are measured upward and perpendicular to the principal Axis are taken as positive.

(v) Distances measured downwards and perpendicular to the principal Axis are taken as negative .
