As we know that the formula salt is NaCl.
sodium has 1 electron in its outer most shell and chlorine has 7 electrons in its outermost shell .
As it is easy to lose 1 electron rather than gaining 7 more electrons.
So, sodium loses its 1 electron to the chlorine atom, so that its outermost shell complete 8 electrons i.e. octet.
Thus, sodium loses an electron so it is a cation and chlorine gains an electron so it is anion.
Therefore, Na - cation and
Cl - anion
