plaster of paris ==> CaSO4 . 1/2 H2O

calcium sulphate hemihydrate


plaster of paris is prepared by heating gypsum to a temperature of 373K or 100C

CaSO4 . 2 H2O--------------> CaSO4 . 1/2 H2O +   1  1/2  H2O

Precautions:


Cold water should be made available to wash off the plaster.

Protect the eyes by wearing goggles.

Cover the face and hands using dust masks and gloves.

Casting of faces and body parts should be avoided.

Wet plaster must be handled properly

Normally, we use calcium sulphate (CuSO4 1/2 H2O). This is commonly known as plaster of Paris.

It is prepared by heating a substance called gypsum at 398 K


Eqn:

2CaSO4.2H2O ------->(CaSO4)2.H2O + 3H2O


The main precaution that we should know while the perpetration is that the reaction is highly exothermic . So you should do it by using gloves other wise it could burn or hands.
