Dovizioso first came to prominence winning the 125cc World Championship in 2004 getting the better of the likes of Casey Stoner and Jorge Lorenzo. Then he finished third in the 250cc World Championship in 2005 behind Dani Pedrosa and Stoner and twice a runner up to Lorenzo in the 250cc World Championship in 2006 and 2007. Since making his debut in MotoGP in 2008 Dovizioso was praised for his consistency and ability to perform on any bike finishing in the top 5 in the championship standings with 3 different manufacturers(Honda, Yamaha, Ducati) and 4 different teams in his first 9 seasons and being a regular podium finisher. However in 2017 he found the extra pace needed to challenge for the title racking up 6 wins throughout the season but ultimately fell short to Marc Marquez in the season finale in Valencia. The subsequent 2 seasons in 2018 and 2019 proved to be less successful even though Dovizioso managed to win 6 combined races and finished runner-up to Marquez yet again both times. Dovizioso finished within the top 5 in 10 of his 13 MotoGP seasons and is widely considered one of "the best MotoGP riders to never win the championship".
