After the fall of Roman empire, Christianity became the prominent religion in Europe. It was during the time of Pope Gregory I, that missionaries converted people in masses, from other beliefs to Christianity.

There were several other movements, at cross-roads with Christianity, like Paganism, the Benedictine rule, Cluniac order etc. But the Church prevailed over all these orders, to become a prominent religious movement.
