If we want to change
any bad human being into a good human, it is possible only through love and
understanding. The Bishop treated the convict with respect, care and
understanding. He knew he had been someone who had suffered a lot in his past;
his suffering had turned him into a callous human being. The Bishop's
understanding turned out to be quite true.
The real transformation occurred when the Bishop saved him again from being imprisoned by Gendarmes. He told them he had gifted his candlesticks to him. The truth was, the convict had stolen them and sneaked out of the Bishop's house in the middle of night.
After saving him from the gendarmes, he actually gifted the candlesticks to him to start his life anew in Paris. This changed him completely.
