The process of addition of oxygen is oxidation and removal is reduction. Sometimes, hydrogen is added for reduction reaction.

\bold{H_2 (g) + Cl_2 (g) \longrightarrow 2HCl (g)}

In the above reaction, the chlorine is reduced.

There is no oxidation process in this reaction.

\bold{H2 (g) + CuO (s) \longrightarrow Cu (s) + H2O (l)}

In the above reaction, the hydrogen is oxidized and the copper is reduced.

\bold{Zn (s) + 2AgNO_3 (aq) \longrightarrow Zn(NO_3)_2 (aq) + 2Ag (s)}

In the above reaction, the zinc metal is oxidized and the silver metal is reduced.
