Answer:

For heat transfer to take place (water in the tank on roof), there has to be body at higher temperature than the water you would like to heat up. Is it Sun or gas as fuel or electrical energy from an electric heater or…Unless you specify source of energy, it is not feasible to tell you how the heat transfer takes place.

  • If heat source is outside (Sun for example), heat would have to be received by radiation on the tank and then tank body has to pass on the heat to water—conduction & convection. This heat source would be more or less ineffective, as it is low grade energy. However if you put solar energy collector with water circulation system, energy is received by radiation and then convection would take over, which could be little faster depending on grace of Sun—availability during this cloudy monsoon atmosphere.
  • If heat is to be give through gas or electricity, first water in contact with source takes heat and the convective currents are established to heat up whole of water.

The mode of heating of the tank in the aforementioned situation is radiation...
Hope it helped!
