Answer:

Let the faster pipe alone take x hours

Slower pipe alone will take ( x+2) hours

Together in 1 hour they fill 1/x + 1/ ( x+2) of the tank

Since together they take 3 hours, in 1 hour they fill 1/3 of tank

1/x +1/ ( x+2) = 1/3

3( x+2) +3x = x ( x+2)

x^2 -4x = 6

ADD 4

x^2 -4x +4 = 10

( x -2) ^2 = 10

x-2 = \/10

x = \/10 +2 = 5.16 hours

ANSWER faster pipe = 5.16 hours and slower one 7.16 hours
