(1/3) x = x - 22  This is the equation corresponding to the statement in the question.

(1/3) x - x = -22

-(2/3) x = -22

-2x = -66

x = 33

If you plug that value of x in the original equation, one-third of 33 equals 11.  33 minus 22 = 11.

Hope it helps.

Let the number be x
Then, According to question,

x - 12 = \frac{1}{3} \times x

 = > x - 12 = \frac{1 \times x}{3}

 = > x - 12 = \frac{x}{3}

 = > x - \frac{x}{3} = 12

 = > \frac{3x - x}{3} = 12

 = > \frac{2x}{ 3} = 12

 = > x = \frac{12 \times 3}{2}

 = > x = 6 \times 3

 = > x = 18

\red{Hence, \: the \: number \: is\: 18}

Hope it'll help.. :-)
