Given:

Two equations 173x + 197y = 149 and 197x + 173y = 221.

To find:

The value of x and y.

Solution:

As given, we have two equations

173x + 197y = 149 (i)

and

197x + 173y = 221 (ii)

Now,

on adding (i) and (ii), we have

370x + 370y = 370

divide both sides by 370, we have,

x + y = 1 \:  \:  \: (iii)

Also,

on subtracting (ii) from (i), we get,

24x - 24y = 72

divide both sides by 24, we have

x - y = 3 \:  \:  \: (iv)

Now,

adding (iii) and (iv), we get

2x = 4

x = 2

Now,

on putting the value of x in (iii), we get

2 + y = 1

y =  - 1

Hence, the value of x and y is 2 and -1 respectively.
