The molarity of H ion in the resulting solution is 0.32 M

Explanation:

Given:

40 mL of 0.5 M HNO₃ is mixed with 60 mL of 0.2 M HCl

To find out:

The molarity of H⁺ ions

Solution:

Moles of HNO₃ in 1 litre = 0.5

Moles of HNO₃ in 40 mL = 0.5/1000 × 40 = 20/1000 = 0.02 moles

HNO₃ → H⁺ + NO₃⁻

0.02 moles of HNO₃ will give 0.02 moles of H⁺

Similarly

Moles of 0.2 M HCl in 60 mL solution = 0.2/1000 × 60 = 0.012 moles

0.012 moles of HCl will give 0.012 moles of H⁺

Total moles of H⁺ = 0.02+0.012 = 0.032

Total Volume of solution = 60 + 40 = 100 mL

In 100 mL moles of H⁺ = 0.032

Therefore, in 1000 mL, moles of H⁺ = 0.32

Thus, molarity of H⁺ ion = 0.32 M

Hope this answer is helpful.
