Of course the answer is 15.

The sign ‘:’ here is called ‘ratio’, which is roughly the same as ‘division’. (e.g. 6:5 means ‘6 divided by 5, or 6/5.) So the whole questions actually means 18/x=6/5. Now you multiple both sides of the equation by 5x (That is you multiply 18/x by 5x and you multiply 6/5 by 5x as well), then you’ll get 18*5=90=6x. Finally, x=90/6=15. Not that difficult question.

There are three different ways to represent a ratio:

a to b

a:b

a/b

So to solve your equation, rewrite the ratios:

6:5=18:x

6/5=18/x

Then cross multiply

18*5=6*x

Divide both sides by 6

(18*5)/6=x

Simplify

x=(18/6)*5=3*5=15

x=15
