So, In this case let us follow the steps according to question. In this case just keep in mind that if you need to find some percent of a number here 'of' refers to multiplication.

So let us find 40% of (multiply) 20

40/100*20
=8

Now lets find 30% of 50

30/100*50
=15

Now it has been said that 40% of 20 which is 8 and 30% of 50 that is 15 is added. So add the both answers.

8+15=23

Now this is the most important step that you have to make it clear.

The questions says that the 40% of 20 and 30% of 15 are added together and that number is 50% that is half of the original number.

In other way we can say that when we added the two answers and we got the answer 23, this 23 is half of some number so we can write it in this way:

50% of something is 23
=> let the something be x
=> 50/100*x=23
=> 1/2*x=23
=>x= 23*2
=> x= 46


So the number is 46. ^_^
