Number of girls = 40% of x

= 40/100 × x

= 2x/5

Then,

according to question,

2x/5 + 600 = x

=> 2x/5 - x = -600

=> 2x-5x/5 = -600

=> -3x/5 = -600

=> x = -600×5/-3

=> x = 1,000

Hence, the total number of the students = 1,000

And the number of the girls = 40% of 1,000

= 40/100 × 1,000

= 400
